BRISTOL'S GENEALOGICAL INFORMATION
21 March 2005 The 1871 census is available online, in full, for the first time. Thanks to a new initiative by The National Archives and Ancestry.co.uk, you can search the index by name and look at scans of original records of the famous, and not so famous, see our census pages. This latest launch means visitors to the National Archives website will now be able to trace their families through four successive censuses, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901. Searching the index is free. For the first time you can actually see the 1871 census records from the comfort of your own home. It has been available on microfilm before, but now you can search by name, making it much easier for you to find that missing branch of your family tree. Searching the index of names is free and if you want to see the full original entry you can do that on a pay-per-view basis.

Friday 15th October 2004 History's 'yellow pages' go online
The University of Leicester is working to put a large slice of local history online. Researchers are digitising old local directories for England and Wales - the Yellow Pages of their day that date back as far as 1750. Of interest to amateur local historians, the results will be put online. According to the website, the project hasbeen funded by a £335,000 Lottery grant.'They were like the Yellow Pages but with a lot more information, including census details, eclipses and even tables showing tide times,' archivist Ian Clarke told the BBC. Certainly if the Public Record Office's notorious website containing the 1901 Census, which struggled to cope with the load of visitors, the University of Leicester can expect a lot of interest. Indeed, although you should be able to find the data at Angles of interest, according to the research team, include people being able to trace the trades of their ancestors or find out how plots of land were originally divided.
