Avonmouth is a district of Bristol, England. The town lies at the mouth of the River Avon on its north bank and on the Bristol Channel. The town is the location of a large port, the Avonmouth Docks. The Royal Portbury Dock, part of the same complex, is on the other side of the Avon. Avonmouth contains a very high concentration of industrial manufacturing plants.
The town lies on the M5 motorway, and the Avonmouth Bridge carries the motorway over the Avon on the southern side of the town. The M49 motorway runs between the M5 near Avonmouth and the M4 motorway at the Second Severn Crossing . The old Severn Bridge and the M48 motorway are linked to Avonmouth by the A403.
(1) Constructing the Severn Bridge c1962. Don Houlden ( a well known Electrical Trade Union Official in Bristol in the 1950s and 60s) points out some features to his brother Eddie. I expect Don had detailed knowledge of what was happening as he would have been concerned for the electricians working on the bridge.
(2) Aust Ferry c1962 taken at the same time as the bridge photo.
(3) Auxilaary Fire Service Bristol about 1940. Eddie Houlden is on the front row, second from right (with glasses). One can read the numbers on some of their collars so someone might be able to identify them from the archives. I do not know where they were based.
